Cypress Canyon

June 24, 2009
Story by Sharon E.
Cypress Canyon, Carmel, CA June 24, 2009

Our “deep dive” day arrived. As we were almost to Pt Lobos, we stopped to assess the conditions at Monastery. The sea was lapping on the beach. Well that said just about everything that needed to be said. We knew Lobos would be accommodating. Now at Lobos, it was low tide as the boat ramp was completely out of the water. The algae and plants were very slick so one was careful climbing in the boat. Once launched, we completed kitting up. Wow selecting a dive site would be easy as every place looked great! As we motored beyond Blue Fish we found part of the canyon wall. Yes, there was the 190’ canyon on the depth finder. We dropped anchor there. This was a rare chance to dive Carmel Canyon. The top of the ridge was 90’ and the sand was 190’. Our plan was 73 minutes run time on 21/30 at 175’ for 25 minutes. We would switch gas at 70’ to 50/50. First Gary donned twin 95s, an 80 cf sling and was over the side. Next Sharon slipped into her gear and was off. Last was Les. Once in the water we detected a slight current. Now on the anchor line, we descended. The first 80’ were green but at 170’, it cleared to 40’ viz. We kicked along the ridge seeing large elephant ear sponges and strawberry anemones carpeting the rocks! It looked like this was the breeding ground for these guys. Never in all the years of diving Monterey and Carmel had we seen such a large grouping of these sponges. It was pretty cool. Most of the regular marine critters were present. We saw huge red Tealia anemones dotting the wall of the channel. The giant green anemones were wide open catching anything drifting by. There were a few 4’ white fluffy metridiums open to capture lunch as well. After about 20 minutes at depth, it was time to begin the 40 minutes ascent, slowly moving up to 120’ at 10’ per minute. Then at 70’, we switched to 50/50. After 70’, our hang was in blue water. But we did come back to the anchor line which simplified things. Due to a bit of current, the line came in handy to keep us from drifting. Now on the surface, next to the boat, we wiggled out of our gear and climbed aboard. Motoring back to Pt Lobos, we prepared for the pack out and drive home. What a super dive.
