Diving and Whales

June 07, 2009
Story by Sharon E.
Enjoying a week of good weather and flat seas, we were hopeful it would hold. Sunday, June 7 presented overcast skies, moderate temps and flat seas. So we motored to Carmel.
The kelp was very healthy this day. Kelp grows about 2 feet per day, and the surface carpeted with kelp definitely supported this stat. Jim carefully selected a site that allowed good anchorage and a means to allow the divers access below the kelp. Soon we were anchored in Carmel on Mono Lobo Wall. We donned our gear and were ready to go. First Les, Shawn, Gary and Don stepped off the stern. They sorted through the surface kelp and descended. Becki and Scott would be doing their dry suit dives today. So Sharon, Chris, Scott and Becki donned and jumped. The kelp was so thick, the divers landed on the kelp and slid through the forest. Sharon and her team hovered at 30’ to practice dry suit skills and once that was accomplished, they descended to check up with Les’ team. Once near the bottom, the viz at 80 feet was approximately 30’. Swimming along the wall, we found clusters of stars and anemones, every color you can imagine. All of the rocks were covered with colorful chorinatics, crimson anemones and schooling fish. One couldn’t miss the hydrocorals and sponges popping out everywhere! The kelp was exceptionally thick today; you maneuvered “thru the trees”. We don’t get to dive this site too often due to currents. But today, the conditions were ideal. After 45 minutes, it was time to surface. Oh, did we tell you about the blue, ring top snail that hitched a ride on Sharon’s cylinders for almost the entire first dive.
Deciding that Carmel was the area to dive, we anchored next on Ling Cod Reef. The surface was flat yet full of kelp. Les, Shawn, Gary and Don dropped in and swam along the reef at about 70’. Closely following were Sharon, Becki, Chris and Scott. We found a wide variety of marine life. We swam through giant crevasses and short stands of palm kelp. The viz was consistently 30’ today. The kelp canopy shadowed the site. It was quite a beautiful site. We gazed upon the pink chorinactis, pink “ferns” of some type…Wow the entire site was pink! Now back at the anchor in the kelp for the deco and soon we were on the surface.
Congrats to Becki and Scott for successful completing of their dry suit dives. Becki also completed her Nitrox diver certification. So they are all set!
Having a bit of time on the return trip and hearing of whales near Moss Landing, everyone was eager to see the whales. We arrived and watched the surface. Soon we saw some spouts. We patiently waited and soon the whales were surfacing. At first one, but soon we observed 3 35’ humpbacks. These whales were just swimming along, appearing not to have any particular agenda. Many times we saw the tail fluke, a sign of the whale diving down. As we watched, we saw one breach, the upper half of this majestic creature coming way out of the water. A truly magnificent sight!
So by now the sun came out, the temp was about 70 degrees, a beautiful day in Monterey. Fun diving and whales!
Join us next month to continue the adventure, July 19.
