Diving the Bay

December 01, 2007
Story by
After a week of thunderstorms, Saturday presented clear skies, sunshine and a 60 degree air temp. On board the Escapade, we motored out to the point but found big water, so we stayed in the Bay. Our first dive was on Eric’s Pinnacle. This site was a favorite of all divers as it offered something for everyone. This site offered 35’ at the top of the pinnacle and 70’ to the sand. The kelp was beautiful this day as well. One had to gaze up to see the sun filtering through and illuminating the kelp. It was like spot lights were focused on the kelp. The viz was only about 30’ dependent on your depth. Things were a bit churned up after the storms. Oh yes, a little surge on the dive. First off the boat were Noelle and Don, headed to do their dry suit training. Soon off the stern were Igor and Slav, followed by Joel, Ben and John. We were greeted with lots of plumose anemones, colorful sponges and soft corals. This pristine site offered the best sand chutes along the rock wall routing you to healthy kelp forests. Also the critters were on the move, crawling down the rocks, seeking safe haven. Many nudibranches were all around - several lemons were huddle together, Spanish shawls secured to the rocks along with the pearly white variety with the frilly edges (trying to use the scientific terms.) These guys are small and the ADT group traveled slowly along the rocks so as not to miss them.
The next dive was on Amentos. We all descended to about 50’ and poked around enjoying the wonders of this great site. Soon Noelle located the hole where the Spanish Shawls lived. She counted about 12 nudibranches there. That was almost something you can count on. Not sure why they tend to gather there but they do. We spied many colorful invertebrates – stars of several varieties, sea cucumbers, anemones, brilliant hues of sponges to list a few. It seems like every cold water starfish lives on this site too. Once back to the anchor and with another 500 PSI to burn, we explored the giant boulders near by. These rocks were covered with bright pink strawberry and pearly white plumose anemones. We found a few small crabs and then a huge decorator crab. Too cool! The viz was 30’ at 50’ fsw and the surge was undetectable.
Congrats were in order, as Don completed his dry suit skills and received his certification. Good job, Don!
A great day for diving. Join us next time!
