A jump on the Shale Beds

December 10, 2006
Story by Sharon E
We are well into the winter diving season for Monterey. In spite of the storms, we found some great water and viz up to 50’! Who said you shouldn’t dive in December! The wave model reported 15’ waves, 7 seconds apart. We motored ahead to check out Pt Pinos and caught a look at the 30’ breakers. Well we decided to stay in the Bay and did two fabulous dives on the Shale Beds. We anchored on the Outer Shale Bed for the first dive. This is a recently discovered site offering a depth of 88’. The ADT team had not been on this site before. Joel and Noelle dropped with doubles and an 80 cf sling. Sharon, Les and Chris jumped with doubles, slings and scooters. Next Gary, Bill and Jim were in and Gary ran the reel. The rest of us just follow their line to keep our bearings. Viz was about 20’ and a bit surgy. Those of us on scooters never really noticed the surge. This deeper shale bed was as beautiful and full of life as the shallow site. We counted 14 different varieties of nudibranches. Of course all the resident marine life was present, i.e. red strawberry and pearly white plumrose anemones, multicolor stars and blue and orange sponges. Colorful critters everywhere you looked. One could hardly see the rocks for all the life. A great use of an hour!

Dive 2 found us on Shale Island. This is the shallower version with a depth of 69”. Sharon, Les and Chris scootered along the island to find several eaten crabs which only means one thing – Octos! We motored around to find the old anchor, part of a once anchor farm. Most of the other anchors have long been harvested. The viz here was about 50’ probably due to this site being a wee bit more protected. Once back on the boat, Gary and Joel shared their encounter with the small octopus. He seemed a bit small to be the guy eating the crabs we saw. Back in October, we saw a larger octo on this site. Maybe we have a colony building, another Dillon Rock? The two dives were a terrific way to round out the weekend. Join us next month.
